General Information about the state of Virginia

The state of Virginia encompasses an area of 42,774 square miles -110,784 km2- making it the thirty-fifth largest state by area.

The capital is Richmond; the largest city is Virginia Beach and the largest metro area is Northern Virginia.

Virginia’s total population according to the 2007 census is 7,700,000 inhabitants.

Virginia’s borders are:

North and East: Maryland and the District of Columbia
East: the Atlantic Ocean

South: North Carolina and Tennessee

West: Kentucky
North and West: West Virginia
